Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991, just days after announcing her was living with HIV

Queen singer Freddie Mercury passed away on this day in 1991. The music superstar died almost three decades ago but has been a constant fixture in popular culture since his passing.

Mercury achieved international fame in the 1970’s and 1980’s as the lead singer of British rock band Queen, his flamboyant style and impressive vocal abilities made him stand out from other musicians of the time. Throughout their career Queen combined a variety of musical influences into their pop-rock sound and they topped the charts around the globe.

Don’t Stop Me Now, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, We Will Rock You, Who Wants to Live Forever, It’s a Kind of Magic, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Radio Gaga and I Want to Break Free are just a handful of the many hits the band enjoyed. Mercury also released a solo album Mr Bad Guy and collaborated with opera star Montserrat Caballé on an album that combined opera and pop sounds.

Mercury was bisexual, and while he did make multiple comments about his sexuality during his life, he did not publicly align himself with LGBTI causes. The day before his death he released a statement confirming that he had been tested for HIV and received a positive diagnosis. Mercury requested the media respect his privacy.

There has been speculation that Mercury was ill for some time, which increased after he appeared looking gaunt in promotional videos for Queen’s most recently releases.

Less than 24 hours later the news broke, he had passed away.

Since his passing a posthumous Queen album has been released, and his life was depicted in the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. There’s been countless documentaries and books about his life and legacy.

Mercury’s passing is seen as a significant point in increasing public awareness about HIV as he was one of the most famous people to be lost to the disease. Following his death the remaining three members of Queen founded the Mercury Phoenix Trust which has raised millions of dollars for HIV research and support services.

In April 1992 a star-studded fundraising concert was held at Wembley Stadium. In front of a crowd of 72,000 people Liza Minnelli, Def Leppard, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Lisa Stansfield, Extreme, Seal, Guns and Roses, Elton John, Paul Young, Metallica and others joined the remaining members of Queen to perform their hits. The band’s collaboration with George Michael on Someone to Love became a chart-topping hit.

Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor continued the band teaming up with former Free singer Paul Rogers for several years, before collaborating with Adam Lambert in recent years.

The story of Queen was brought to the screen in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

George Michael performed ‘Jesus for a Child’ for the first time in 1994

At the 1994 MTV Europe Awards George Michael performed a new song Jesus to a Child. The song was a homage to Micheal’s partner Brazilian fashion designer Anselmo Feleppa who had died of an AIDS related illness the previous year.

At the time George Michael had not publicly shared that he was gay. The world would find this out when he was arrested for cruising in a Los Angeles public toilet in 1998.

Michael later shared that following Feleppa’s death he had been unable to write music, but Jesus to a Child, which reflected on thier relationship, was written in under an hour.

The song would not be released until 1996 and would serve as the lead single to Michael’s Older album. The album saw George Michael return to the album charts after a five- and half-year break that involved legal battles with his record company.

Whenever the singer performed the song in concerts, he took a moment to dedicate it to Anselmo. The video for the song is filled with symbolic images including two men holding hands while trapped inside boxes.

Lou Reed’s ‘Walk of the Wild Side’ was released in 1972

Lou Reed’s song Walk on the Wild Side was released on this day in 1972. It’s one of the first pop songs to make reference to someone being transgender.

The song shares the stories of several characters, based on real people, and touches on gender identity, male sex workers, oral sex, and drug use. Name checked in the tune are many of the luminaries from Andy Warhol’s New York studio The Factory, including Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell.

The Names Project is formed and leads to the AIDS Memorial Quilt

In 1985 at an AIDS Candlelight vigil in San Francisco activist Cleave Jones conceives the Names Project. It resulted in the creation of the AIDS Memorial Quilt which has become one of the largest community art projects of all time.   The final quilt as of 2020 if assembled weighs an estimated 54 tones.

Here’s five more tracks to check out.

This week we’ve got new music including The Boss taking a journey into soul, Stereophonics’ Adam Zindani launches a solo career, and a lost recording from Queen.

Plus, a very meaningful new tune from Tove Lo,

Bruce Springsteen – Nightshift

For his 21st album Only the Strong Survive Bruce Springsteen offers a selection of his favourite soul tunes.

Take a listen to his take on the under-appreciated Commodores track Nightshift. Released in 1985 the song pays tribute to soul legends Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who had both died the previous year. It made the Top 10 in Australia, and was the Commodores only hit after the departure of Lionel Richie in 1982.

Adam Zindani – What About Love

Zindani has been making music for decades as the guitarist with Stereophonics, and his own side-project Casino, but this is his first solo release. It’s a slice of 80’s inspired coolness.

Queen – Face It Alone

An unexpected new track from Queen with the vocals of the late Freddie Mercury. The recording was made in the late 1980’s during the sessions for The Miracle – the last Queen album released before Mercury’s death in 1991.

It’s not a great song, but there is something beautiful in hearing Freddie’s voice one more time.

Tove Lo – Grapefruit

On the surface this is a great piece of dance music, but when you listen to the lyrics you discover Tove Lo has a serious message about experiences of struggling with body image. Her fifth album Dirt Femme was released last week.

Inhaler – Love Will Get You There

This is just a lovely slice of jangle indie-pop goodness. The track is from their second album Love and Bruises which was released back at the start of the year. Hailing from Ireland, the lead singer Elijah Hewson is the son of U2 singer Bono.

Queen + Adam Lambert have announced details of Rhapsody Over London, an exclusive concert spectacular filmed live at London’s O2 Arena during their current sold-out European Tour.

The exclusive Live Concert Film will feature a live Q&A with Brian, Roger and Adam, speaking backstage from the penultimate show of their European tour.

Fans around the world will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase tickets and submit their questions via video by July 19th, for the band to see and answer live during the Q&A.

The concert will only be available until 31st July on the platform and accompanied by special VOD packages, where fans will have access to additional concerts and interviews.

The acclaimed documentary The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story will be available exclusively for ticket holders for a full two days prior to the livestream.

The concert was filmed during the band’s sold out 10-day run at The O2 Arena, London in early June. Having been attended by over half a million concert goers during the2022 36-date European tour, Queen + Adam Lambert’s Rhapsody Over London live concert film is set to reach a worldwide audience of millions more when the experience premieres online on July 24.

The broadcast will give fans around the world one more chance to experience the magic of the Rhapsody Tour. A massive undertaking, utilising 26 cameras and a crew of over 100 film technicians, the production presents the band’s two and half hour show in its entirety.

The audience will also be able to interact with fellow fans throughout the show using Kiswe’s fan engagement features, including fan chat feed and cheer buttons, fan react videos enabling viewers to upload video selfies, purchase custom digital stickers, and the ability to buy exclusive in-concert merchandise.

In a dazzling 28 song performance, Queen + Adam Lambert’s live show honours Freddie Mercury’s dictum that “too far is never far enough” with state-of-the art video content, lasers and pyrotechnics.

Adam Lambert’s vocal prowess and showmanship is a special effect in itself, soaring to the ecstatic high notes of Somebody to Love, and appearing on a bejewelled Harley Davidson bike for Bicycle Race. But at its heart the Rhapsody show stays a very human honouring of the core band’s work, as Brian May simply strums his acoustic guitar to 20,000 people for his A Night at the Opera gem 39, and duets with film of Freddie on a moving Love Of My Life. Roger Taylor performs a majestic These Are The Days Of Our Lives as moments from Queen’s history poignantly plays out on the expansive screens.

A full arsenal of hits are refreshed by the band’s live virtuosity, May’s Red Special guitar finding new sorcery in A Kind of Magic as well as reaching stratospheric heights in a towering guitar solo. Taylor and Lambert emulate Bowie and Mercury in a thunderous Under Pressure. Bohemian Rhapsody resurrects Queen’s glorious 1975 harmonies before a cyborg-masked May’s rousing solo, and Lambert’s rush to the front for the storming finale.

The Rhapsody Over London show will premiere live on July 24 via Kiswe’s global streaming platform.

Hooking up virtually between the UK and Los Angeles, Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor and singer Adam Lambert have recorded a new version of Queen’s classic, We Are The Champions.

Widely regarded as one of the most instantly recognizable anthems, it was this same song Queen + Adam Lambert played for their first performance together on the May 2009 American Idol finale.

Brian May and Roger Taylor have been performing pop-up concerts from their respective homes while in lockdown and the seeds of this new May, Taylor and Lambert version of We Are The Champions were sown when May posted a MicroCon invitation to jam with him on the classic Queen track on his Instagram.

Taylor was first to respond, followed by Lambert who in his at-home performance changed the lyric mid-song to You are the Champions.

Overwhelmed with calls for the track to be made available to download the resulting ‘virtual jam’ version now titled You Are The Champions and additionally featuring band bass player Neil Fairclough, is available now on all streaming and download services.

Proceeds raised from the track will go to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization (WHO), powered by the United Nations Foundation. The Fund provides tools and resources to health workers on the frontlines globally, including PPE, testing kits, trainings, and more. Additionally, the Fund supports the rapid development of a vaccine and therapeutics.

As the unfolding coronavirus outbreak has forced Queen + Adam Lambert to reschedule their 27 date UK and European tour to 2021, it’s hoped this new We Are The Champions will also provide some consolation for disappointed fans.

Since its initial release in October 1977, the Freddie Mercury-penned We Are The Champions, has become a victory parade anthem uniting sports terraces and on-field celebrations the world over. This enduring anthem is frequently heard at the winning line of motor races and has also become synonymous with track and field events, soccer and baseball championships and even (without endorsement) at presidential campaign rallies.

Freddie said of We Are The Champions: “I wanted to write something that everyone could sing along to. And at the same time, I thought it would be nice to have a winning song that’s meant for everyone.”

“By each playing our part and addressing the difficult times we are all sharing we will win this challenge,” the band say. “During this time our thoughts and thanks are with those dedicated medical heroes standing up to the battle daily on our behalf. They are the champions. You are the champions.”

“It seems to me we should dedicate this one to all the front-line soldiers fighting for Humanity against the insurgent coronavirus,” Brian May said of the tune.

“Just like our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents who fought for us in two world wars, those brave warriors in the front line are our new CHAMPIONS. That means the doctors, nurses, cleaners, porters, drivers, tea-ladies and gentlemen, and all who are quietly risking their lives daily to save the lives of our kin. CHAMPIONS ALL!!!”

Roger Taylor adds: “As a father with a daughter in the front line, I am ultra-aware of the vital work they are doing daily to save us and our society. Their bravery and sacrifice must not be prejudiced by anything less than a one hundred per cent effort by our governments to protect them. They are precious to us all and they are truly our champions.”

Adam Lambert has also dedicated the cover to all those on the frontline all over the world that we dedicate our performance.

“Thank you for keeping us safe, we are in awe of your bravery and strength.”

Queen + Adam Lambert’s You Are The Champions is available now.

A new recording of Freddie Mercury performing Time Waits for No One, a demo version of his song Time, has been released.

Mercury first recorded the song in the mid 1980’s for friend Dave Clark’s musical project Time. The concept album featured some of the biggest singers of the time including Cliff Richard, Dionne Warwick, Leo Sayer and Julian Lennon. Clark was the leader of The Dave Clark Five, famous for their 60’s hit Glad All Over.

Mercury performed the title track to the project, but now a demo recording of the song has been uncovered. Clark returned to work on the project, isolating Mercury’s vocals and recorded a new piano track for the tune.

The song was recorded in early 1986, a time when several of the band members of Queen had spent some time recording solo material.

When the track was first released Clark and Mercury gave several media interviews and said they had worked all through the night to make the recording of the song, and often argued about how the song should sound, but they both made sacrifices to come up with the final recording.

Take a listen to the new version.

The ever popular Queen and Adam Lambert are heading back to Australia for another tour around the country. The band are currently riding on a new wave of popularity following the success of the film Bohemian Rhapsody.

Their all new stadium tour will bring them back to Australia for six massive stadium shows in 2020. The tour will kick off in Brisbane on Thursday 13th February at Suncorp Stadium before heading to Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on Saturday 15th February.

They’ll play Melbourne’s AAMI Park on Wednesday 19th February, before taking over Perth’s Optus Stadium on Sunday 23rd February. They’ll head back across the Nullabor for a show at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday 26th February, before returning to Queensland for a show at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast on Saturday 29th February.

Announcing their Rhapsody Tour of Australia Roger Taylor said the band were eager to get back to playing live shows.

“We are ready for Australia and raring to get back with our new show.” Taylor said.

Adam Lambert said the production they would bring to Australia would be spectacular.

“We have a brand-new visual spectacle that will reframe these iconic songs and we are excited to reveal the show to Australian fans!” Founding member of the band Brian May added, “This is a great opportunity. Our last tour featured our most ambitious production ever and got us our best notices ever. So we decided to rip it apart and get even more ambitious! Watch out, Australia! ”

Paul Dainty, President and CEO of TEG-DAINTY said the tour would see the long running band return to stadiums to accommodate their massive fan base.

“With the enormous success of the highest grossing music biopic of all time – Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen’s popularity in Australia is as huge as it gets, we can’t wait to bring Queen + Adam Lambert back to Australia with this brand new stadium production and watch them bring their iconic songs to life.”

The Rhapsody Tour will debut a brand new larger-than-life production. Set designer Ric Lipson said it would expand upon their previous productions.

“Queen + Adam Lambert’s Rhapsody tour will, once again for them, expand the parameters of what a live music experience can be. This new show promises to be their most spectacular yet, an innovative and interactive celebration of the continued power of Queen’s music.” Lipson said.

Since Adam Lambert first shared the stage with Queen for the 2009 American Idol final, his dynamic performances have reinvigorated the band and delighted fans worldwide. Their first full show thrilled a half-a-million-strong crowd in the Ukraine capital city of Kiev in June 2012. Since then May and Taylor’s musical fireworks have been matched by Lambert’s vocal prowess and stage presence, making for an explosive combination. Over 180 gigs later, the partnership has proven a commercial and critical triumph, playing to enraptured full houses in every corner of the world.

Completing the tour line-up are long-term collaborator Spike Edney on keyboards, Neil Fairclough on bass, and Tyler Warren on percussion.

The WA Labor party has been accused of casual homophobia after posting a video which depicts retiring Liberal Minister Christopher Pyne as Queen singer Freddie Mercury.

The short video which was posted to party’s social media platforms on Saturday superimposes the retiring Defence Minister’s head on the body of the late Queen singer as he sings the band’s hit Another One Bites the Dust.

On Saturday Christopher Pyne announced he would be retiring from politics and would not stand at the upcoming federal election.

Pyne is regularly mocked for having effeminate mannerisms, and many followers of WA Labors social media channels expressed their view that the clip had homophobic undertones.

Commenters said it was in particularly poor form to post the video of the day of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras – the nation’s largest LGBTIQ+ celebration.

“This is not a good tweet (homophobic). Delete it.” posted one commenter.  “It’s 2019, you dimwits. A bare minimum would be deleting it, but an apology too would be better” said another.

“Yeah let’s use being gay as a butt of a joke. Come on Pyne has plenty of character flaws without conflating this like this.” complained another.

“This is spectacularly poor form I can’t even. Get in the sea. – You can do your own research on how many times people have insinuated that Chris is gay. So to photoshop his face on a gay icon is spectacularly poor form. Both to Chris & the entire LGBTIQ community. On Mardi Gras weekend.” one Twitter follower added.

“On what planet are *he’s a poof* jokes ok? Delete and apologise.” suggested another.

On Sunday the post was deleted from the party’s Twitter account but remained on WA Labor’s Facebook page.

WA Labor’s State Secretary Matt Dixon told OUTinPerth there was nothing intentionally homophobic about the video.

“There is nothing intentionally homophobic about our video, our feedback on Facebook has been very well received, on Twitter some have tried to view it in another light which is was never intended.

“WA Labor has a long and proud history of supporting and working with the LGBTIQ community in WA.

“Our video was removed from Twitter late this afternoon as users of that platform raised concerns with the video. It hasn’t received the same reaction on Facebook.” Dixon said.

“We didn’t use Steve Ciobo in the video because no one knows who he is.”

The WA Labor State Secretary said people should not read too much into the intent of the video’s message, and said those who highlight the video being released on the day of Mardi Gras were reading too much into the video’s message; “we’re not in the business of taking such a crass pot shots as some have tried to draw connection with.” Dixon said.

“People should enjoy the video in the spirit it was intended as a comic use of a classic song to draw attention of another senior Minister abandoning Scott Morrison’s Government. “BITES THE DUST” as it would be.

“WA Labor wishes Christopher Pyne all the best in his retirement from public life.” Dixon said.

BarbieQ is celebrating two decades of divahood, marking the local icon’s 20th year in drag.

The Connections Nightclub entertainment manager and woman about town has been a fixture of drag and LGBTI+ events around Perth for years, long before drag came to the forefront of pop culture through reality TV.

The queen has made a name for herself with her fabulously choreographed dance shows, quick wit on the mic, innovative performances (such as her collaborations with local circus troupe Kinetica), and so much more.

We caught up with Miss Q to find out what she’s learned over the last twenty years, what advice she has for upcoming entertainers, and what we can expect from her fiery 20th anniversary show.

When did you realise you wanted to pursue drag as a career?

Actually I never wanted to be a drag queen! When I first started coming out onto the scene in 1997 I just didn’t understand it – I had no idea what I was meant to think or feel, so it took me awhile to actually enjoy watching the shows.

I then became friends with some of the performers and started to understand what it was all about! I was a very new gay 17 year old so it felt like a massive new realm for me!

Fast forward a year, I lost my job, I needed money, I was broke and then I saw a poster advertising a Wednesday night talent quest called “drag factory” at DC’s Nightclub.

I decided to enter as I had been a dancer since I was a child, and I ended up winning my heat (Performing Ooh Aah… Just A Little Bit by Gina G) and then the grand final (performing a drag strip to Gimme Gimme by Whigfield) which was a $500 first prize.

I then was booked by hostess Chlamidia to work at TRADE which was the big Thursday night venue back then. It eventually grew and I slowly built up my nights and my employment.

What was your first ever gig as Barbie?

My first gig was at TRADE (which was at O2 at the time, now called Air) and it was with Chlamidia and Swish and we did a Billie Piper show. Oh the days….

What are some of your drag highlights over the years?

I have so many fond memories of my past experiences that it is hard to narrow them down.

I’m super proud of creating POP as I wanted to give the younger queens an opportunity to make some money while practicing their craft – it’s really hard to get gigs and it takes time to get your makeup skills and your looks together – so this gave the younger ones the opportunity to practice, gain a skill (Responsible Service of Alcohol and bartending) and to earn some money to put back into it.

My 15th anniversary show was a huge highlight for me as I never thought I would feel so much love in a 20 minute period! The room was full of faces from the earlier years of my career as well as the current club land people and it warmed my soul!

Performing at The Court for the Pulse Orlando fundraiser was also beautiful – seeing everyone come together to help people who have suffered a terrible loss in a world where we should be loving each other and celebrating individuality.

Fringe World has also been an area I never thought I would get an opportunity to perform or produce and direct entertainment. The Sinsuality series won a major Fringe World award and that was such a proud moment for me and my co-directors and cast. A little idea that turned into something wonderful which will always be close in my heart.

You are known for your jaw-dropping shows – Tell us about your journey to becoming Connections’ showrunner.

Like everyone I started at the bottom and had to work my way up – the journey has not been an easy one – but it has been worth it.

I’ve been hired and fired and rehired by both venues due to many different aspects – drag, drugs and rock n roll was a way of life once upon a time that found me getting too big for my boots, too demanding with no reason to be that way. I wanted everything my way and yesterday, even though my skill set wasn’t ready.

I slowly worked my way back in and had to fight for my place back in the pecking order as there was certainly a few people that tried (and failed) to keep me out! I got back in….

At 25 I needed change, I hadn’t taken drugs in about a year and I auditioned for Princess Cruises as a male dancer and within 8 weeks of sending my video I was flown to LA to start rehearsals. I came home twice a year and still performed on those short visits and to my surprise people really enjoyed it when I was back.
Over the last year of my dancing abroad I got an email from Gavin who was the venue manager of Connections Nightclub at the time – the email warmed my soul.

They had offered me the Entertainment Manager position officially, even though I hadn’t decided whether I was coming home for good – but that certainly locked it in for me – it was a dream job!

There is a movement on social media towards making sure fans support local drag performers – not just Drag Race queens. How can people get behind their local stars?

People need to remember that drag was around well before reality television! Just because one panel of judges says that this is good or this is bad – doesn’t mean that everything revolves around that!

Look at your favorite drag queens or venues social media, there is so much entertainment out there every night of the week between bingo events, open stage nights, production shows, room theatre queens, retro nights etc.

The drag realm in Perth is huge and these crazy and creative people are incredible! Find them, say hi to them, take a photo with them, watch them and for goodness sake put your bloody phones DOWN and just WATCH THE SHOW!!!

What is one piece of advice you would go back and give to baby Barbie 20 years ago.

I could sit here and reel off a tonne of advice to give myself, but I wouldn’t be me if I changed the path I have been on.

I’ve seen people come and go, I’ve seen trash turn to treasure, I’ve seen the mighty fall and I’ve seen the shit hit the fan. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve fallen and I’ve picked myself up again. It’s who I am.

I try not to “give advice” but to “give information” as I believe we all have our own journey so who am I to preach… but I’m still here, so sometimes information can be valuable!

What can we expect to see in your upcoming show 20?

Well it’s certainly going to be sweaty! My dancers are amazing, they just blow my mind.

I’ve chosen tracks and artists that have really influenced me over the years or are resonating with how I feel at the moment, with a bit thrown in there just for a bit of old school drag FUN. I hope there is something in there for everyone!

Catch BarbieQ’s special anniversary show 20 at Connections Nightclub on Saturday Sept 22nd and 29th, Oct 13th and Nov 3rd, as well as her regular weekly appearances at Tag A Drag Bingo, POP, Dragathon and all around town! You can also find Barbie on Facebook.
