Olympian Tom Daley will call for major sporting events not to be held in countries which criminalise homosexuality.

Daley says countries like Qatar, who are set to host football’s World Cup, should not be considered as appropriate venues for major events while they continue to persecute LGBTIQA+ people.

The diving champion will make the statement when he delivers The Alternative Christmas Message on Britain’s Channel 4 on Christmas Day.

Each year the BBC plays a per-recorded message from the Queen where the monarch offers her views on the state of the world, and the year gone by.  Rival commercial station has a celebrity or person of note deliver an alternative view.

Since 1993 a host of different personalities have shared their thoughts, including Sharon Osborne, Jamie Oliver, Adam Hills, and even Marge Simpson. The honour has also been given to many controversial figures including Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran and whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

In his address Daley questions why the World Cup is being held in countries who discriminate against LGBTIQA+ people.

“In 2022 the World Cup is being held in the second most dangerous country on Earth for queer people, Qatar. Why are we allowing places that aren’t safe for all fans and all players to host our most prestigious sporting events? Hosting a World Cup is an honour. Why are we honouring them? Holding a Formula One grand prix is an honour. Why are we honouring Saudi Arabia?”

Daley said he was lucky to live in the United Kingdom with husband Dustin Lance Black and their son Robert, but said sport was one area that still had a long way to go in tackling homophobia.

He highlighted that Australian Josh Cavallo, who shared that he was gay this year, is the only top-flight footballer in the world who has come out.

“Well done Josh, I mean, your courage is amazing. But just think for a moment about the number of players who are too scared to speak up, and how lonely that must be.

“Nearly 7% of people in the UK identify as gay or bisexual and there are about 500 Premier League players. That means statistically there are enough players for three football teams running out on to that pitch every week. At least one gay man at every single club in the Premier League, living a lie. So, if I had one Christmas wish it would be that next year, that changes. That one impossibly brave Premier League player steps forward and says ‘I am gay’.

“That person would inspire gay people everywhere, give hope to thousands of teenagers struggling with their sexuality and save the lives of countless young people who don’t currently feel like they have a place in this world.” Daley says in the segment.

Daley also voices his solidarity with people who are transgender and praises athletes who are transgender who took part in this year’s Olympics.

British diving champion Tom Daley has called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ban countries who retain the death penalty against gay people from participating in the Olympics.

“I think it’s really important to try and create change, rather than just highlighting or shining a light on those things,” Daley said while accepting the Sports Award at the 2021 Attitude Awards in London.

His comments last week came ahead of International Day Against the Death Penalty. Daley said many people would be shocked to hear that the death penalty still existed in many nations.

“I want to make it my mission over the next, well, hopefully before the Paris Olympics in 2024, to make it so that the countries [where it’s] punishable by death for LGBT people are not allowed to compete at the Olympic Games.”

There are currently 11 countries in the world where homosexuality is punishable by death. The list includes Mauritania, Nigeria, Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Daley also criticised the Organisers of the FIFA World Cup for selecting Qatar as the host city for their 2022 competition, noting that while the death penalty is not applied for homosexuality, it does remain on their law books.

Diving champion Tom Daley and his husband screenwriter Dustin Lance Black have announced the birth of their son.

The couple shared the birth of their son via a brief announcement in The Times newspaper in London. THe message read; “Black-Daley: On 27 June 2018 to Thomas Robert Daley and Dustin Lance Black, a son, Robert Ray.”

The couple revealed that they were expecting a baby via a surrogate in the USA back in February. Tom Daley has said that he hopes to be as good a father as his own Dad, who was also named Robert. Daley’s father passed away in 2011.

British diver Tom Daley has won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Daley won the synchronized 10-metres platform with teammate Daniel Goodfellow.

Daley took the opportunity to highlight that many Commonwealth countries still retain outdated laws outlawing homosexuality, a remnant of Britain’s colonial past.

The diver posted a photo of himself and Goodfellow to his social media pages

Alongside emoji of gold emdals and pride flags Daley said; “37 of the competing nations criminalise being LGBT+. I feel so lucky to be able to be openly who I am without worry. I hope one day every athlete from every nation in the commonwealth will be free to compete openly as who they are too!”

Daley’s shout out for global gay rights follows Australian diver Matthew Mitcham highlighting the issue earlier in the week.

Speaking to News.com Mitcham, who is part of Channel Seven’s commentary team for the Commonwealth Games, said being open about his sexuality allowed him to be a better athlete.

“Speaking from experience, being an openly gay authentic me, that had the most profound affect on my self esteem, which then had the most profound affect on my performance.” Mitcham said.

British gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell is calling for the issue to be addressed at the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which will take place in the UK next April.

The longstanding LGBTI rights activist said it’s time for the Commonwealth leaders to discuss an issue they’ve always been avoiding, arguing that it is time to ensure legal protection against discrimination and hate crime for the Commonwealth’s estimated 100-200 million LGBT+ citizens.

“LGBT+ issues have never been discussed, not even once, in any of the CHOGM leaders sessions over the last six decades. I have personally tried to get them on the agenda at CHOGM for 30 years and been rebuffed every time. Surely in 2018 we can at least have a discussion with the Commonwealth leaders? This discussion must be in the main summit and not side-lined to the NGO Commonwealth People’s Forum, as has happened in the past,” Tatchell said in a media release.

The Commonwealth Games has thrilled spectators worldwide with the latest round in an ongoing athletic rivalry between Britain and Australia and their respective prolific diving champions.

Both took the diving world by storm at an early age, are openly gay, and beloved and adored by millions and generally regarded as very handsome and all around nice guys. Mitcham: Australia’s perfect ten who’s gone on to broaden his talents to literature and cabaret. Daley: bred for diving excellence from age 9 and named World’s Sexiest Man by Attitude Magazine.

In 2010, Mitcham, by then an Olympic champion, had the gold snatched from under his nose by Daley, six years his junior at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The pair are pitted against each other once again for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Once again, Daley took the gold for the mens’ 10 metre platform with a score of 82.85, marking England’s best diving result in the Commonwealth games, with a total of 10 medals, four of which are gold.

Mitcham had gained his sixth silver Commonwealth Games medal at the synchronised mens’ 3 meatre platform event. But he wasn’t leaving without gold.

Mitcham and his diving partner Domonic Bedggood were up against England’s Tom Daley and James Denny. It was neck and neck. Mitcham and Bedggood narrowly took out the gold with 399.54 points to Daley and Denny’s 399.36.

“I think maybe I attached a little bit more significance to this then what maybe other people might attach to a Commonwealth Games gold medal but having come second so many times I was kind of almost resigned to the fact that maybe I was just going to have a whole collection of silvers,” Mitcham said, as reported by The Age..

“So I did set the expectations to be much higher than perhaps normal which has a lot of risk associated with it so I think that is why I might have jumped around a little bit ungraciously when it came up on the scoreboard that we had actually won.”

Daley extended a show of good sportsmanship when commenting on Mitcham’s reaction to the win.

“No that’s just Matt. If you know Matt or ever meet Matt you’d realise he’s a ray of sunshine to put it politely,” he said.
