QANTAS has launched a new advertising campaign revisiting Peter Allen’s I Still Call Australia Home and tapping some of Australia’s most loved entertainment and sporting stars for the new ad.

The new clip features iconic images of Australia from Uluru to Bondi, Melbourne and Western Australia’s distinctive bright pink Hutt Lagoon, alongside appearance from giants of Australia’s entertainment and sports realms.

Kylie Minogue is shown looking homesick in a meditative moment in a recording studio.

Pop singer and actor Troye Sivan appears in the Hollywood Hills overlooking the lights of Los Angeles.

Hugh Jackman, who is currently starring in the musical The Music Man on Broadway is caught backstage.

Tennis champion Ash Barty is shown connecting with family over a video call from Japan, while Football star Adam Goodes and Olympic swimmer Bronte Campbell can also be seen in the clip.

QANTAS CEO Alan Joyce said now was the perfect time for the airline to revisit one of it’s most memorable advertising campaigns, using the music of Peter Allen.

“The last major Qantas advert came as the country was rolling up its sleeves to be vaccinated so we could all reconnect, and it really struck a chord. Now that borders are finally open, and staying open, this is the perfect time to relaunch this Peter Allen classic as the national carrier’s anthem.

“The full version of this advert is effectively a short film that highlights Australia’s stunning natural beauty and unique culture while celebrating the incredible resilience that has really shone through recently.

“After a very difficult two years, we’re focused on recovery and have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline, including several new international destinations, decisions on new aircraft and recruiting more people.” Joyce said.

Take a look at the clip.

Peter Allen’s patriotic tune was first released back in 1980, and while it was never a chart-topper, it quickly became an anthem for Australians.

When QANTAS use the song the original lyrics are changed, opting to sing about Rome rather than Rio, because QANTAS does not have any flights to Rio.

Troye Sivan has written two new songs to accompany his new film Three Months. First he shared Trouble a collaboration with Jay Som, now he’s teamed up with Australian artist Gordi. Both tracks were produced by Styalz Fuego.

Gordi and Troye’s tune is Wait. The pair have had a long running creative partnership, first joining forces on the song Postcard on Troye’s second album Bloom.

This is the first original release for Gordi since her ARIA-nominated album Our Two Skins was released in 2020 and was praised for its beauty, narrating a story of isolation and sexual identity, discovered against the backdrop of Australia’s same sex marriage vote.

Gordi said she loved collaborating with Troye Sivan.

“I love collaborating with Troye. He has this unique way of speaking in images that we then try and translate into melody and lyrics. Our instincts with songwriting really seem to align and after our work on Postcard, I was excited to have another chance to work together.

“He told me all about Three Months and said he wanted to write an original song for it. As a proud member of the queer community, I felt a deep connection to the film. We wanted to write a song that was worthy of the story.” Gordi said of the collaboration.

THe video for the new tune was made up of deleted scenes and outtakes from the film.

Sivan’s Three Months will make it’s Australian debut on Paramount+.

In the film Sivan stars as Caleb Khan, a South Florida teen who loves is camera, his weed and his grandmother.

On the eve of his high school graduation, everything changes when he realises he’s been exposed to HIV. While he waits three months for the definitive tests on his status, he finds love in the most unlikely of places. Also appearing in the film are some very respected actors including Ellen Burstyn and Lou Gossett Jr.

Sivan’s last screen outing was a supporting role in the acclaimed film Boy Erased. In his younger days he appeared in Wolverine and the Spud trilogy of films.

He’s currently film the new television series The Idol, which was created by Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd) alongside Euphoria showrunner Sam Levison, and Reza Fahim.

Filming of Three Months began in March 2020 but the production was shut down due to Covid-19, and resumed eight months later.

Filming of Three Months began in March 2020 but the production was shut down due to Covid-19, and resumed eight months later.

Take a look at the trailer for the film.

Three Months was written and directed by Jared Frieder, who previously worked on the MTV series Sweet/Vicious.  It’s Frieder’s first directorial feature and he’s shared the story was based on his own experiences.

“At its core, it’s a film about dismantling the shame around HIV and showing that it’s no longer a death sentence in our modern world with access to health care,” he said. “It’s about a kid coming of age and realizing that the very things that make him different also make him indispensable and worthy of love. And perhaps most of all, it’s about what it’s like to wait.” Frieder said in a statement.

Back in 2020 Lisa Dobrin, CEO of WAAC, spoke to OUTinPerth about what someone should do if they believe they have been exposed to HIV.

Dobrin, said if an individual has been exposed, or suspects they have been exposed to HIV, they should present to an Emergency Department or GP and ask for Post Exposure Prophylaxis, known as PEP.

“PEP is a short course of medication taken very soon after exposure to HIV to prevent the virus from taking hold in the body,” she says. “It’s important to start it within 72 hours after being exposed to HIV for it to be effective, so every hour counts.”

The health expert also spoke about the need for Western Australians to have an up to date knowledge of current HIV treatment and prevention options.

In recent years PrEP preventative treatments have had a major effect on reducing the level of new diagnosis of HIV in many jurisdictions, including Western Australia.

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a once a day medication that is highly effective in preventing people from contracting HIV, combined with effective treatments that allow people who are living with HIV to maintain an undetectable viral load, it has made a major difference in the fight against HIV.

Vengaboys have a new song out, it’s a cover of 1999 (I Wanna Go Back) which was a hit for Charlie XCX and Troye Sivan. This energetic new version is going to get everyone jumping from New York to San Francisco.

The Vengaboys are made up of: D-Nice, Captain Kim, Sailor Robin and Cowboy Donny.

Speaking of the single, Robin states: “We never stopped spreading love and fun. But this new century is not exactly cooperative. We feel a responsibility to bring the good times back!”

Donny agrees: “For us, the 90’s never stopped anyway. But we do notice that a lot of people are weighed down by a heavy mood and it is kind of striking, that this is so since the new millennium. I’m just saying…”.

Captain Kim adds: “We have been on a non-stop world tour since 1999. Covid brought a brutal halt to that. After more than a year of absence, we’ve been dying to re-unite with our friends and fans.”

D’Nice can’t wait to get back on stage again and is really hoping the bad times will soon be over, adding “With this new single we hope to make up for the lost fun, and we’re ready to party like it’s 1999!”

1999 was the year the Vengaboys conquered the world with their famous summer anthems: Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! and We’re Going To Ibiza! Both songs rocketed straight to a #1 chart position in countries all over the world including the UK and became 2 of the biggest songs of the Summer of 1999.

Vengaboys have scored numerous multi-platinum hits, have over 1.1 million YouTube subscribers and continue to generate over 4 million streams monthly on Spotify alone.

To create their new video they teamed up with the app Wombo. It’s a lot of fun recognising the different late 90’s acts brought to life in the clip.

OUTinPerth chatted to Sailor Robin from Vengaboys back in 2016, read our interview.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade took over the Sydney Cricket Ground last night in a dazzling display of self-expression, proving that not even a global pandemic can stop LGBTQI+ communities rising together in pride and passion.

A stadium crowd of 36,000 spectators cheered on as 5,000 marchers, from over 120 parade entries, marched onto the field in a vibrant display of diversity and unity. Parade partner SBS broadcast the event live to hundreds of thousands of homes and viewing parties across the country.

For the first time the parade left it’s historically linked location of Oxford Street and relocated to the more Covid-safe venue of the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras CEO Albert Kruger said the event was a huge success.

“This year’s Mardi Gras was a once in a lifetime experience,” Kruger said. “With a reworked COVID-Safe format, our iconic Parade definitely looked different to how it has in the past, but even in this new setup, Mardi Gras continues to be celebration of who we are and what we’ve achieved, as well as a moment for us to advocate for the change we need to see in the future.”

“Among the colourful costumes and beating music, the spirit of protest was as strong as it ever has been. Because, while Australia has made so many strides since 1978, we haven’t achieved equality.”

“Today, faith-based service providers, including schools, can lawfully turn us away, even when they receive public funding to deliver their essential services. Trans Australians are vilified, struggle to access critical healthcare and face insurmountable hurdles to updating their ID documents to reflect who they are.”

“These are just some of the issues that remain unaddressed in our society. Working together, we have an opportunity to change things. The Parade was just one moment where we could come together to rise for equality, but our work doesn’t start and end with the Parade,” Kruger said.

Alongside the parade there was a line-up of performances from Electric Fields, Montaigne, and indie pop darling G Flip and Sneaky Sound System vocalist Connie Mitchell. UK powerhouse Rita Ora closed the festivities with an epic headline performance of her hit tracks Let Me Love You, Bang Bang, BIG, and Anywhere.

Reflecting on the night, Albert Kruger said, “The Parade has gone ahead every year since 1978, no matter what, so we’re very happy we could continue to honour this commitment and deliver a safe event for our community during these times.”

“We look forward to returning to our home on Oxford Street as soon as we can, but if the last 12 months has taught us anything it’s that our community are resilient. We have faced many challenges throughout history and we have always found a way to celebrate, to express ourselves and have our voices heard. Last night was proof of this.”

While there were some knock out performances during the event, many well known entertainers also featured in the parade including Jack Vidgen and Troye Sivan.

Five street art installations have appeared across Australia ahead of this weekend’s Mardi Gras celebrations including a new mural of Perth’s own Troye Sivan.

The street art murals are popping up in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne, and highlight each city’s local ‘Rising Heroes’ from the queer community on Instagram.

Instagram has partnered with LGBTQ+ creators including musicians Troye Sivan and Cub Sport, Olympian Michelle Heyman, Indigenous drag performer Felicia Foxx, trans model AJ Clementine, comedian Jeff van de Zandt, and more to celebrate Mardi Gras 2021. The murals were created and installed by some of Australia’s top street artists.

The Troye Sivan mural was created by Jerome Davenport and can be found on the cnr of Charles Street and Newcastle Street in West Perth. The mural draws upon the theme for this year’s Mardi Gras celebrations which is ‘I Rise’.

The QR code included on each mural will take viewers to the ‘Safe & Strong 2021’ Safety and Wellbeing Guide for the LGBTQ+ Community on Facebook and Instagram. The Guide was launched last week in partnership with Trans Pride Australia, Black Rainbow, ACON, Twenty10 and Minus18.

Instagram’s ‘Rising Heroes’ Mardi Gras campaign also includes new in-app features to celebrate Mardi Gras and the LGBTQ+ community including rainbow hashtags, rainbow story rings, and a shared Mardi Gras story this Saturday 6 March which will showcase Mardi Gras posts from the people you follow.

Zaac d’Almeida, Strategic Partnership Manager for Instagram Australia said the company was pleased to bring a little bit of the Mardi Gras magic across the country.

“Queer creators on Instagram are a source of inspiration, entertainment, and support for Australians everywhere. We’re proud to honor these local ‘Rising Heroes’ in their home cities and spread the Mardi Gras sparkle across the country,” d’Almeida said. “Mardi Gras is about visibility and community, and these five murals celebrate the vibrant new generation of LGBTQ+ creators who embody these qualities every day.”
