Myra DuBois got her big break on Britain’s Got Talent before popping up in the film Everybody’s Taking About Jamie and appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe and in the West End. This month she brings her show Be Well to Fringe World.

For people who have not met you before, how would you introduce yourself? Who is Myra DuBois.

I would introduce myself by saying “Hello, nice to meet you, my names Myra” and then I’d leave a little pause for the person to process. They’ll be thinking to themselves “Someone as famous as Myra DuBois and she’s introducing herself? How humble”. And they’d be right. As for “Who is Myra DuBois”? Well, I am. And you know that, because you emailed me. What a silly question! Speaking as an empath, I’m embarrassed for you.

Take us back to the first time you took to the stage, where was it, and how did it go down?

Do you know, I was a little baby when I first ever appeared on a stage. It’s true! It was in the local church’s play, and an act of gender-blind casting landed me the lead role of Jesus! Legend has it I screamed the place down when they nailed me to the cross. Some might worry that such a monumental role so early on might lead to something of a messiah complex later in life, but as I always say; it’s only a “complex” if it isn’t true.

What are you looking forward to during your sojourn down under?

Well, I’ve been to Sydney and Melbourne before, but Perth and Adelaide are totally new to me, so I look forward to having what we call in the UK “a pootle and a mooch”. An aimless little walk around town, see the sights, that sort of thing. If any of your readers have recommendations, I’d love to hear them, they must tweet me! And then there’s my shows. My shows are very conversational, you see. I talk to the audience, get to know them. I feel like I leave every city with new friends! Friends that I charge money to spend time with, but friends non-the-less.

Tell us about your upcoming Fringe World show ‘Be Well’ – what can we expect?

A connection. A connection pour moi. You see, and I don’t think this will come as a surprise to any of your readers, but it’s been a tough couple of years. So, when I put this show together I had only one objective, to send my audience out of the theatre in a much better mood than they entered it. Yes, there’ll be laughs. Yes, I’ll be singing. When your voice, like mine, is a gift from God (sorry to name-drop) it’d be a crime not to. But it’s all bells and whistles to communicate my core message, my life hack to becoming a better you! And what is that life hack? You’ll have to come to the show I’m afraid.

You hail from Yorkshire, which we only know from television shows, which is a more accurate depiction All Creatures Great and Small or Happy Valley?

I’m afraid I couldn’t tell you, not having watched either of those shows. Some of us watch television, some of us are on it. But I CAN tell you all about Rotherham, where I proudly hail from. It’s a quaint little market town nestled in the picturesque green valleys of South Yorkshire. It’s charming, everyone there is brimming with happiness and if anyone calls it “bogan” they’re jealous liars!

Your comedy show focuses on mental health, what’s one trick you know for making your day instantly better?

Sing! As loud and as proud as you can! Then again, none of you are blessed with my voice so it’s probably best if you don’t.

What do you always keep in your handbag?

A list of ready-made answers for uninspiring questions.

Catch Myra DuBois and her razor-sharp tongue in Be Well at Fringe World from 13th February.

Connections Nightclub has issued an apology over imagery promoting an upcoming Halloween Party in a way that was offensive to First Nation Australians.

On their Instagram page the popular nightclub offered an apology.

“On Wednesday, we published an online promotional image for Halloween that was deeply offensive to elders and First Nations people within our community, and whose name, slogan and imagery we deeply apologise for and have removed.

“As a country founded on the slaughter and destruction of culture, referencing the pillaging of villages is totally inappropriate and hurtful and the posts have been taken down.

“We would never knowingly be disrespectful or disrespectful to the Custodians and traditional owners of the Land and deeply regret disappointing and causing offence to anyone, particularly those amongst our First Nations community and allies within the LGBTIQA+ community.

“The intentions of the theme was to explore a Queer interpretation of the origins of what we now call ‘Halloween’ from pre-Roman and Pre-Christian Pagan calendars and societies in Northern Europe.

‘No offense was intended to any of the First Nations people here or indeed anywhere in the world.

“We can and absolutely will do better on in these matters. We greatly appreciate engage the engagement and dialogue from organisations and groups that help us to learn from mistakes and further progress and improve our venues culture, inclusivity, practice and procedures.” the venue said,

Local grassroots advocacy group Boorloo Justice first raised concerns over the now-deleted imagery on social media, urging the venue to take this as a learning point.

“Using this kind of language is making light of a dark of most Indigenous people’s history,” the group published.

“Not to mention the countless other problematic feedback we have received about this also unknowingly and ignorantly appropriating r*pe culture. Implying people can be ‘pillaged’.

“We aren’t looking to be nasty, or asking to cancel anyone. We are asking for accountability and transparency with the unintentional offence that has been caused.”

The apology comes after the venue made a renewed commitment to improve its operations after examples of black face being performed at the venue were highlighted. Examples of racist performances and cultural misappropriation drew apologies from venues, performers and from this publication.

The apology over the latest error has been welcomed by First People’s Rainbow Mob WA, the advocacy organisation that is the peak body for all things Indigenous LGBTQA+ in WA.

They shared with OUTinPerth that they had worked together with Connections to resolve the issue, and fully support the subsequent apology, citing it as an example of how organisations can work together to create a better inclusive community.

A Night of Musical Theatre | Connections Nightclub | til Feb 5 | ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Earlier in the day I’d read an article about the venue for A Night of Musical Theatre – Connections Nightclub – and it was the few lines of newspaper column announcing Connections birth in 1975 that played in my mind as I entered the building to watch this Fringe offering.

The show opened with all six wildly talented artists on stage, belting out Seasons of Love from Rent. The high quality, passionate and local ensemble is made up of Lisa Michelle, Mia Simonette, Therese Cruise, David Gray, Nicolas Cruse and Juan Albanese.

As Seasons of Love rang out I wasn’t initially transported to the AIDS crisis; the backdrop against which Rent, the musical from which the song originates, plays out. Instead I flashed back five and a half years to the Perth memorial gathering, after the devastating events in Orlando. As I listened I looked at the beautiful, young and vibrant people on stage and around me in the audience; I looked up at the mirror balls on the ceiling and at the dance floor beneath my feet and let the lyrics wash over me evoking reverence and love for all the beautiful, young and vibrant folk who’ve come before us.

A Night of Musical Theatre is comfort food for your soul. The songs are familiar and expertly delivered. The performers are dressed to impress but not in costume. The set is simple coloured lights against a black background and yet each different song sets a vastly different scene. This level of skill is not simply about holding a tune, it is about giving life to emotions and conveying them to the audience with full bodied performances, both figuratively and literally. With no set or costumes or choreography to carry the show this pared down, purity of performance was perfection!

My companion for the evening was my son’s new partner, who knew half the cast and all the numbers. They absolutely reside in the centre of the Venn diagram which is the LGBTQIA+ community and musical theatre! From someone who performs in the local musical theatre scene the joy of their reactions, the audible gasps of delight, only enhanced my own enjoyment. The camaraderie between the cast members and an intimate setting with a decent contingent of friends in the audience made for a warm and fuzzy, feel good vibe.

The renditions were heartfelt and sometimes accompanied by personal anecdotes. David Gray partnered with Nicholas Cruse, who shared a snippet of his pre Covid existence, before they powerfully duetted Roxanne. Gray later sang A Little Bit from Crazy, Just Like Me, about coming out as gay and likened the lyrics to his own experiences, this performance powerful in a different way, with gentle strength and self compassion.

The finale was a song from Kinky Boots. My night’s companion had performed in the local production of this musical and their squirming and squeaking as the opening notes rang were drowned out only by the cheer from the audience as iconic, long, red, heeled boots strode across the stage. For me though, my thoughts were with a friend on the other side of the world, who co-wrote the screenplay for the movie the musical is based on. He’s a friend I am most fond of and it’s often struck me how remarkable it truly is to be able to see your thoughts and words go out into the world and develop a life of their own, and give so much meaning to so many.

With everything happening in the world the Fringe Festival offers us a chance to escape, or a chance to come home and whichever end of the spectrum you fancy, you are sure to find something to suit. At the end of the show David Gray exhorted the audience to go out and see everything Fringe has to offer, and I can only echo those sentiments. Over the last few years the arts have truly been a lifeline for us all, despite the blows they have taken as an industry.

For me, A Night Of Musical Theatre was like coming home and being greeted by old friends. There was a lovely feeling of community, and of connection … at Connections.

One of the owners of the iconic Connections Nightclub and professional party perfectionist Tim Brown has been named as this year’s inductee into The Proud Awards Hall of Fame.

An integral part of the southern hemisphere’s longest running LGBTQIA+ club, Tim has been part of the Connections Nightclub family for 30 of the club’s magical 46 years.

We caught up with Tim ahead of this weekend’s Proud Awards ceremony to discuss the role Connections Nightclub has played in Perth’s LGBTQIA+ scene, and reminisce about some of the fabulous shows that have dazzled on the Connies stage.

“It’s said way too often these days but all I can really say is that it is an honour because it really is,” Tim says of Connections’ legacy as the longest running gay bar in the bottom half of the world.

“Not many people get to be involved in something so very special and certainly not for as long as I have. Incredible too because such special things and places don’t last. Certainly not for over four decades.”

“Oh my goodness, there have been so many wonderful shows across the years, with so many wonderful performers and producers from both inside the team and out,” Tim continues.

“If I were to be selfish (which I figure I’m allowed a little bit of at this point!) my favourite would be Supermodels which was us doing Ballroom in the early 90s. As was the case at that time and for many years, I produced and directed that one… that’s the selfish bit!”

“Full catwalk into the audience, incredible production (courtesy of one of our greatest mentors, Malcolm Hughes) costumes by Aaron Davey and of course Madonna’s Vogue which had just been released.”

Tim says that’s just one highlight from hundreds of amazing queer shows, recalling drag queens flying from the ceiling, pyrotechnics and music video quality dance numbers.

“BarbieQ who runs all the shows now has made so much great work over the years. The highlight is really that the queens and the production team produce such amazing, high quality work again and again.”

We love Tim Brown

Of his three decades at the club as both employee and owner, Tim reflects on some of his favourite memories at 81 James Street, Northbridge.

“I think some of my greatest memories are those huge nights, big birthdays and Prides, times when we extended the club out into the carpark out the back or took over Plaka.”

Tim is also proud of the range of show-stopping, theatre-quality productions the team have been able to pull off over the years.

“[We’ve] built trees in the middle of the room, produced shows in the round, put the legendary Strykermeyer on a scissor-lift in the carpark out the back having him perform on three levels; the carpark, at the club (when there were windows out that way) and then over and above the terrace with a three story high dress that unfurled as he performed,” Tim explains.

But Tim says it’s the little things, as much as the larger-than-life campery, that makes Connections so legendary.

“Being on the dancefloor on a hot summer’s night with shirtless men everywhere but then seeing, amongst them all, two women dancing together topless and no-one was batting an eyelid. It’s being on the terrace, in the thick of it, seeing the sheer breadth of our community all having an amazing time and getting to meet each other and realizing that, much as they’re all very different that they’re wanting the same things.”

But most of all, Tim is proud that so many are able to call Connections Nightclub home.

“I’d like to think it was a home. A safe place, a place of refuge and a place of escape. Escape from the everyday and somewhere that they could truly be themselves.”

“I’d love to think that it continued being that for many decades more. The world has changed a hell of a lot in those thirty years for our people but we all still need places where we feel we belong, where we can let our hair down and feel truly free.”

Tim Brown joins Aunty Vanessa Smith, June Lowe, Mark Reid, Strykermeyer and DJ Seb Sharp in The Proud Awards Hall of Fame.

The Proud Awards is being held this Saturday 9th October at Connections Nightclub. For tickets and more info, head over to Facebook.

Drag star Karlotta, one of Perth’s pioneering drag performers, has passed away.

Kim Jones, better known to many in Perth’s LGBTQIA+ scene as drag star Karlotta, passed away unexpectedly last week.

Jones, who was living in Tasmania at the time of his death, passed away in his sleep, just a week shy of his 60th birthday.

Friends and colleagues have remembered his wild performances over the decades, and a never-ending love of his idol Tina Turner.

Karlotta, spelt with a K to differentiate from the east-coast based performer, first began performing drag in the 1970s and was regular performer at Connections Nightclub in its early days. Not only was she a pioneer of the drag scene, she was also one of the few indigenous drag performers.

“I first started performing with Lisa Gibson and Cinnamon Ryan in Girls, Girls, Girls! at the Swan Brewery Hotels, there was also the Raffles in the early 1970s and I was one of the original Stray Girls at Connections.” Karlotta told OUTinPerth back in 2009.

Taking part in the regular column Tea With Miss Katherine Karlotta shared that she went through a few drag names over her early days of performing including been known as Crystal and Jedda, before settling on Karlotta.

In the 1970s and early 1980s she performed at Connections Nightclub, longtime friend Michael Edwards recalled the elaborate parties that used to occur at Connections in the 1980s.

“I met him at Connections in 1981, and we became good friends.” Michael recalled. “There was quite a posse at that time with Strykermeyer, Audrey Woodstock Rose, Candy Conrad, Natasha and Karlotta.

“Kim was always the bridesmaid, never the bride,” Michael said. “He was pretty well-known as a mischief maker, and was often in the chorus line.”

Karlotta’s moment in the spotlight came at Connections tenth birthday in 1985.

“The whole club was transformed into Mad Max’s Thunderdome, it was incredible. When you walked in and walked up the stairs it was all covered in chicken wire and Paper-Mache, it was an absolutely huge event.

“Karlotta was always known for Tina Turner impersonations – so who else was going to get the lead role? It was absolutely marvelous for him, and it really validated him,” Michael shared.

For the tenth birthday celebrations Karlotta got a big entry, flying across the club from the DJ box to the stage via a flying fox.

“It was very exciting and a wonderful time, and the show ran for a good week afterwards, because they’d put so much effort into decorating the club.”

Michael shared how Kim had been a great friend over the decades and maintained many close friendships with people in Perth, and around the country.

Over the years Karlotta returned to performing drag regularly. OUTinPerth captured her at Replay an event hosted by Lost Gay Perth in 2015, where she delivered another classic moment of Tina Turner inspired magic.

Perth’s LGBTI venues have issued a fresh wave of apologies for performances that included blackface and cultural appropriation in the past.

Both The Court Hotel and Connections Nightclub issued apologies for past performances in 2020, but following local drag star Scarlett Adams being selected for the upcoming series of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under the issue has reignited leading to both businesses to issue fresh apologies.

“We want to apologise to the community as we deconstruct these ugly parts of our past and recognize the historical institutionalized privilege that we carry at the expense of the BIPOC community.” Connections Nightclub said in a statement posted to their website.

“The use of blackface and the mockery of the Aboriginal community and flag is abhorrent to us as a business and inclusive venue. Whilst the individual involved was asked to leave and suspended from shifts, we must acknowledge that this took place in our venue and a person presenting in such a derogatory and offensive way should never have been allowed to cross our threshold.

“It is regrettable that further necessary disciplinary action subsequently did not take place at that time and we would like to reassure our patrons and current staff that procedures, policies and standards have developed significantly in the intervening decade.”

“We also need to reflect on a series of events where we used the traditional dress, make up and garments of several cultures that were not our own. These included, among others; the cultures, nationalities and minorities of China, India, Japan and Korea. These were as inappropriate then as at any other time and we never want to use other peoples’ culture or identity as a ‘theme’.

“We constantly seek and continue to take on community views and we vowed we will do better. We have already had a number of additional positive meetings with a range of organizations, groups and patrons and are working towards better outcomes with a range of groups to ensure the welcoming, inclusive culture that we strive to provide.

“We hope that the wider community can come forth and recommend community leaders or organizational bodies that we can engage in dialogue as we seek to educate ourselves, our staff and our patronage and show that we want to be consistent in heading towards a future of more diverse representation and education of the cultures of those we have hurt.” the venue said.

The Court Hotel also issued a new apology earlier in the week.

“The Court strives to be a safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of sexuality, age, gender or race. We celebrate differences in people and welcome people from all nationalities at the venue.” the venue said in a statement

“We acknowledge the historic images shared on social media of Scarlet Adams and other performers here at The Court have offended people. Whilst we did not specify the content of the shows, we do take responsibility for allowing them to happen on our stage almost a decade ago and we unreservedly apologise for any offense caused by any performance at the venue that has not been culturally appropriate.

“These shows, quite simply, should not have happened.

“The Court has developed policies for both professional and amateur drags to ensure that the performers reflect the values of the venue. The management team have worked with the drag queens to ensure that racist and culturally inappropriate shows do not happen again on our stage.

“At The Court, we aim to educate as we believe the most positive outcomes are achieved this way, in this case we ourselves have also been educated. The queen in question has apologized after realising the offense they have caused and we accept their apologies and appreciate their openness to also being educated on the issue. We feel, in this situation, the queen is not only deeply sorry for their actions but they fully appreciate and understand the issue.

“We hope this message goes towards healing for the hurt we have caused.” the venue said in a post to Facebook.

While the apology from Connections Nightclub has largely been praised by patrons, the message from The Court Hotel received a harsh backlash from followers of their page. Many people called for the venue to remove the Pride symbols from the outside of the venue arguing it was no longer for safe space for LGBTIQ+ people, while others described the most recent apology as disingenuous.  This lead to the venue issuing an addendum to their original apology addressing the additional issues raised.

There have also been apologies for several of Perth’s well-know drag stars including Dean Misdale (formerly Feminem the Future), Scarlet Adams, Perri Prism (formerly Perri Oxide),  Hannah Conda and others.

From the team behind the much-loved Spank! pool party events that light up the summer calendar, something different is coming to Connections Nightclub this weekend.

Yanique Ent. are bringing the sounds and culture of Latin America and Brazil to the dancefloor with K’lypso, and it promises to be a visual extravaganza.

Yanique’s team of dance instructors will be taking to the stage and making sure everyone is in on the action – so make sure you have your dancing shoes on as DJ Harry and Yanique bring a selection of R&B, dancehall, salsa and samba to the decks.

Sip on freshly prepared cocktails and get down to some world rhythms, nostalgic beats and classic from across genres to bring everyone to the dancefloor.

K’lypso takes over Connections Nightclub this Saturday 20th February. For tickets and more information, head to eventbrite.com.au
